Adventures in Samos

Samos is one of the most beautiful Greek islands, lush with vegetation, mountains, caves, gorgeous beaches, picturesque villages and crystal clear sea. It is located in the North Aegean, with the islands Ikaria & Fournoi to the west, Patmos to the south, and to the east, the port of Kuşadası and ancient city of Ephesus to the east in Turkey.

During ancient times, Samos was one of the leading commercial centers of Greece due to its geographic position near Asia Minor. It is also the birthplace of the Greek goddess, Hera and the ancient sanctuary and temple complex dedicated to her attracted pilgrims from all over the ancient world. The great philosopher, mathematician and  father of geometry, Pythagoras, was also from Samos–and one can visit the cave where he lived and taught classes. Also, on Samos is one of the greatest engineering feats in ancient times, The Eupalinos Tunnel. The 1036 meter long aqueduct tunnel was constructed to bring spring water to the ancient city of Samos. It was constructed by digging at  opposite points at the base of the mountain and the engineer Eupalinos used geometry and mathematical calculations to align the two tunnels to meet in the center. The tunnel successfully supplied the town for over 1100 years with fresh spring water.

Wellness Retreat on Ikaria Island

Ikaria is famous for being a “blue zone” where inhabitants live significantly longer while enjoying better health than most other places in the world. This is because of the local diet, which includes local herbs, honey, wine, as well as the sense of community, as exemplified by the many “panagyria” or local festivals which include not only food and drink, but much dancing. The island also is blessed with therapeutic thermal baths.  Our 7 day program will encompass all these aspects– thermal hot spring therapy, cooking lessons, properties and use of herbs and honey, a visit to the local winery, an evening at a local festival, visits to the villages while enjoying all the deliciously heathy local specialties.

There is a terrific place to base a trip at the Agriolykos pension in Therma village, which is perched on a rock above the sea , next to the ancient Greek  baths, surrounded by carob, lentisk, sage, thyme, wild oregano, olive and cypress trees as well as renowned curative thermal springs –a magical environment as an ally in our healing journeys.

10 Days in the Amazing Peloponnese

Messinia will take your breath away. This is a land filled with contrasting landscapes of olive groves, waterfalls and beautiful coves with sandy beaches and crystal turquoise sea. There are also many historical sites to visit, including Bronze Age Nestor’s Palace with exciting new finds and a recently opened archaeological site, Ancient Messene –an entire city in existence for more than 1000 years in extraordinary condition and the mesmerizing Medieval Fortresses of Methoni, Koroni and Pylos, each situated next to the sea, offering amazing views and with its own story to tell.z

Easter in Greece

Spring in Greece is the most beautiful time to visit. The countryside is bursting with color as wildflowers bloom in profusion. Greek Easter is the most important holiday of the year, made up of the entire Holy Week and Easter Week, which this year ends with the festival of Protomayia—May 1, where locals picnic, gather wildflowers to make beautiful wreaths for their doors, hung until they are burned in another festival on June 23. Holy week re-enacts Christ’s passion with many traditions, which we will participate in to experience true Greek Easter. During Holy Week, we will enjoy Greek vegetarian cuisine, as that is what fills tables before the Easter feast of lamb. Guests will be welcomed into Greek homes to experience the warm hospitality, delicious food and conviviality that makes Greek festivals so special and unforgettable.
